Ferret proofing

Ferrets are energetic playful creatures that enjoy time out of there cage and need it every day. Along with that playful nature ferrets are very curious. This is why Ferret Proofing your house is so important. Imagine with me for a second you were a two inch tall Ferret. Think of all the nifty places you could go in your house. Behind the dresser, in the couch or even down the heater vent. Some times the best way to do this is to lie down on the floor and get there view point. You may see some things that could get your little friend in trouble. Here are a couple ideas on ferret proofing your house.

One of the best ways to keep your ferret safe is to ferret proof one room. You could even call it the ferret room or the ferret pad maybe. This way you can focus all your ferret proofing energy on a smaller place. Instead of getting over whelmed with doing your entire house. Unfortunately some times this is not always possible. So instead you could pick a ferret area like the T.V room and then just block all the exits.

It is very important that you do not let the ferrets escape your house. Its aright to take them out if your holding them or if you have them on a ferret harness. A harness can be obtained at your local pet store or you can order them online a good place to pick one up is at www.ferret.com. If you are letting your ferret play in an area where there are doors that lead outside or even windows. Make sure they are shut all the way. It doesn’t take much space for a ferret to squeeze through .If you are ever opening the door make sure you keep your eye on your ferret because they move very quickly and they could dart right past you. Another hazard in this area are screen doors. Ferrets can claw right threw the screen to the outside. This is an easy fix though just make sure the glass door is shut when the ferret is out.

Appliances and furniture can both be deadly hazards for ferrets. Ferrets can go under or behind them and get stuck. One big thing with furniture are the chairs that recline. Simply because if your ferret where to ever crawl underneath the chair. Then you sat down and put the leg rest up you’re little buddy could get caught between two moving parts. You must also check the fabric of pillows and chairs. If there are any holes your ferret could easily crawl up into the chair. This happened to me once before with my ferret Moby. It took me quite the while to get her out. One other major danger with appliances is the power cords they can be chewed ending up with your ferret getting electrocuted.

A major problem that ferrets have is swallowing things and getting there digestive system blocked. This requires taking your ferret to the vet to get surgery or else they could die. So you should always keep an eye on your pet ferret and not leave them hanging around any thing small they could eat. At the same time its your responsibility as a pet owner to make sure you don’t leave any thing on the ground like packing peanuts, rubber bands, erasers or soft toys.

I hope some of these ideas where helpful to you as your pursue ferret care. Remember ferret proofing is to keep your little friend safe. It is not a one time job either you’ll be surprised to see all the places they can find that you couldn’t. Ferret proofing is a very important part of ferret care. And could mean the difference between a happy ferret and a dead ferret. Good lucky ferret proofing!

Getting Started in Ferret Care

If your thinking about getting started in ferret care. There are 3 important things you should start to consider. Try thinking about these I hope it is helpful in getting started in ferret care and gets you excited for owning your own little fur ball.

The first important thing to consider in ferret care is the work. Ferrets require work to keep them healthy and well trained. Unlike other small animals like hamsters or rats that can just be dropped in a cage and are good to go. You may want to consider reading a book or 2 before you buy a ferret so you know all the ins and outs of ferret care. One great book for beginner ferret care that I would recommend reading is Ferret Care Secrets Revealed.

The next important thing to consider in ferret care is the time. Even though ferrets are nocturnal and sleep between 18 and 20 hours a day they need attention from you. They love to be played with, I would compare a baby ferret to a kitten which loves to play. The best part about a ferret though is that it never grows out of that fun lovable “kitten” stage. If you’re ready to have a lovable fur ball to play with then you’ll love a ferret providing you have the time.

Another important thing to consider in ferret care is your ferrets home. Do you have every thing you need? Is your cage adequate? Ferrets have a very specific diet and if there diet is neglected it could make them unhealthy, over weight and even shorten there life. If its done right though, you could extend there life for 6 years to double that.

Ferrets are very curious animals and need to be amused. This is easy when you are home but when your ferrets alone they need things like toys or ferret furniture. When it comes to ferret toys they need to be very sturdy because ferrets play hard so its safer to get ferret specific toys. Otherwise they will break. This doesn’t sound bad but your ferret could swallow small pieces which could easily kill them. Even things like the food dish and water bowl need to be “ferret proof” or your going to end up with a very messy cage and your going to have to clean it all the time. The best thing to do is get dishes that clip to the cage or can be tied down so that your little furry friend wont tip them over. Going to a local pet store would be a good place to get your ferrets needs. I find that a lot of pet stores don’t always have to much in lines of ferret care. I would recommend if you’re in that boat, that you could go to www.ferret.com. They have everything your ferret could ever want.

I hope you found my 3 thoughts helpful in starting your ferret care and they got you even more excited for getting your very own ferret. I remember when I got my first ferret I was very excited to get her home. Unfortunately there where a lot of things I didn’t know so I was not ready for ferret care. I hope this information will help others not get caught in the same situation that I was in. Ferret care is not hard, it just requires some knowledge.
